Ascension of the Blues follows the evolution of indigenous American music, paying homage along the way to some of music's greatest artists. Featured are a number of new and provocative works that play well next to fresh readings of some classics. From Blues to Bop, Ragtime to Rap, and some good ol' rock n' roll thrown in, this is 100 years of music. A wild ride, sometimes cruel and strange, other times humorous, always engaging, told in song, speech, music and dance. Ascension of the Blues illustrates how the Blues, which gave rise to Gospel, Jazz, Folk and ultimately informed R & B, Soul, Country, Hip Hop, Rap, Funk and Rock n' Roll - still resonates today and is woven into the fabric of American music and culture.

This Bay Area-based jazz artist is a charter member of Bobby McFerrin's renowned Voicestra and is a founding member of Bay Area's own, SoVoSo. Learn how to create intricate harmonies for multiple voices, break out of the 'box" of traditional harmonic forms, sing over improvised harmonies and jazz changes, and let your spirit lead you. In addition to harmony, attendees will utilize vocal and body percussion to help develop rhythmic foundations and sound palates for the improvisations that will be developed during the workshop.
